Dermaroller (also known as microneedling) is simple, affordable and novel technique used for treatment of atropic scars and skin rejuvenation. It causes collagen induction through controlled mechanical stimulation of skin that leads to softening of scars, realignment of existing collagen and stimulation of new collagen.
Which indication it is used?
Dermaroller or microneedling used in treatment of:
- Post-acne scars
- Fine lines, wrinkles
- Lax and photo damaged skin
- Reduction of stretch mark
- Introduction of drugs into dermis in management of alopecia
How is microneedling done?
Microneedling is done using a dermaroller. It is drum- shaped cylinder holding 192 needles (length ranging 0.5 to 2 mm) mounted on plastic handle. The patient is advised to apply and leave on topical anaesthesia over area to be operated for atleast 1 hour before the procedure. The area is cleansed & disinfected. Microneedling is done for 10-15 minutes, until there is pin-point bleeding or erythema. A thin layer of antibiotic cream is applied on treated area. The patient is advised topical antibiotic for 4-5 days. He may also require oral analgesics if treatment is done using needle size greater than 2 mm. He should also avoid sun or use sunscreens for a week to prevent post- inflammatory pigmentation. A total number of 4-6 treatment sessions are required, repeated at 4-8 week interval. This procedure can also be combined with topical drug delivery in case of alopecia.
What are the side effects?
The dermaroller procedure is well tolerated. Transient side effects such as milia, secondary bacterial infection and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation may be seen. Patients usually resume their normal activities immediately after treatment. The needled area may show small bruising and mild redness for initial 2-3 days. Eventually all areas heal without scar.
